By April 16, 2024No Comments

What are the changes and their implications?

Research indicates that 3.6 billion people already live in areas highly susceptible to climate change. It is clear we are well and truly in a world where Climate change is having an impact globally.  In light of the impact that Climate change is having on society, the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) have adopted climate change considerations within a number of the ISO Standards. This has been aimed to enable organisations to positively contribute to reducing the  negative impact of climate change.

What are the changes?

The changes have been applied to a number of ISO standards and relate to Clause 4.1 (Context) And Clause 4.2 (Understanding needs and expectations of Interested parties). The new requirement states the following:

Specifically, organisations are now required to determine whether climate change is a relevant issue and acknowledge that interested parties can have requirements related to climate change

The standards impacted here consist of the following:

  1. ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems
  2. ISO 27001:2022 Information Security Management Systems
  3. ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems
  4. ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Managemenet Systems

What does this mean for organisations?

Organisations are encouraged to undertake risk assessments of climate related aspects affecting their business and ensure these are reflected in oranisational goals.

For organisations holding accredited certifications, there is no requirement for a new certificate or transition to a new standard version. Instead, the focus is on enhancing the scope and effectiveness of existing certifications to encompass climate change considerations.
